How to start dropshipping on eBay UK

Last checked 7 October 2026

Dropshipping on eBay UK is allowed and it can work — but most new sellers who fail do it on the rules, not the products. These are the steps in the order they matter, each with the source so you can check it yourself.

1. Register as a business seller

eBay’s business seller policy is direct: “An eBay seller must register as a business if, for example, they sell items they have bought to resell.” Dropshipping is exactly that, so open a business account (or switch your existing one). Business sellers must show full contact details for the business, clear prices including delivery and tax, a VAT number if they are VAT-registered, and a returns policy.

Separately, since 1 January 2024 platforms such as eBay report sellers’ sales to HMRC once they pass 30 sales or €2,000 (about £1,700) in a calendar year. That is a reporting rule, not a new tax — but it means HMRC sees what you sell, so keep records from the first order.

2. Follow eBay’s supplier rule

eBay allows fulfilling orders directly from a wholesale supplier, and does not allow buying the item from another retailer or marketplace that ships it to your buyer. This one rule decides which suppliers you can use — read the full rules before you list anything.

3. Choose your suppliers

  • CJ Dropshipping: a dropshipping supplier that sells to you as a business and ships to your buyer.
  • AliExpress: a marketplace of many sellers with a dropshipping programme — judge each seller against eBay’s rule.
  • Alibaba: wholesale, usually with minimum order quantities — better for buying stock than for one-off dropshipped orders.

Compare one product at a time: price and delivery vary by product and shipping method. See CJ Dropshipping vs AliExpress.

4. Price after every fee, not before

A business seller pays a final value fee, a per-order fee, a regulatory operating fee and VAT on those fees — about 18% of a £23 sale in “Everything else”, before you have paid the supplier. Work out your profit per product with the free eBay UK fee calculator and read eBay UK seller fees explained.

On imported consignments of £135 or less, eBay charges the buyer UK VAT itself. That changes your numbers — see the £135 VAT rule.

5. Set handling times you can actually meet

Late deliveries and out-of-stock cancellations count against you, whoever shipped the parcel. Set a dispatch time your supplier can meet, upload tracking as soon as it exists, and never let a listing keep selling after the supplier runs out. Here is how eBay measures sellers.

6. Keep an eye on VAT registration

Once your taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any rolling 12 months you must register for VAT — and for a reseller that means sales, not profit. See the VAT registration threshold.

7. Automate the repetitive parts

Listing, stock sync, ordering from the supplier and uploading tracking are where dropshippers lose hours and make the mistakes that cost them their standards. Zixo Agent does those for you, with your approval on every listing and every order: eBay and auto-ordering from CJ Dropshipping and AliExpress are included on every plan, from £14.99 a month (founder price) — see pricing.
